Setting up Mercury Mail
- Download Mercury Mail for Win32 from www.pmail.com and install it.
To use the POP3 server, do not enable Pegasus Mail integration.
The components you need are MercuryS, MercuryE, and MercuryP.
- If you are using Windows NT or 2000, download FireDaemon service from www.firedaemon.com and install it.
If you are using Windows 95/98/Me, you will need to put Mercury in the startup group when you are done. For now, start Mercury and skip the next 3 steps.
- Start the FireDaemon GUI by running "FireDaemonUI.exe" from the FireDaemon directory (usually C:\Program Files\FireDaemon v0.09c"

- Click OK. Go to Administrative Tools-Services and start the service called "Firedaemon Service: Mercury Mail"
- You should now see the Mercury Mail icon (a red wing) in the System Tray. Double click on it to bring it up.
- Select Configuration-Mercury Core Module.
- Enter the Internet name for this system as the public DNS name (i.e. mail.domain.com) or put its public IP address in brackets (i.e. [24.48.50.100]).
- Set the Username of postmaster to hal.
- "Send copies of all errors to the postmaster" should be checked.
- Click on the "Local Domains" tab.
- Click "Add New Domain". Enter the domain name (i.e. domain.com) for Internet name and click OK.
- Click "Add New Domain". Enter the public IP address in brackets (i.e. [24.48.50.100]) for Internet name and click OK.
- Click "Add New Domain". Enter the public DNS name (i.e. mail.domain.com) for Internet name and click OK.
- Click the OK button to close this window.
- Select Configuration-MercuryS SMTP Server.
- Click on the "Relay/Connection Control" tab.
- Click on the "Add restriction" button. Enter the private IP subnet (i.e. 192.168.1.0) and click OK.
- "Do not permit SMTP relaying of non-local mail" should be checked.
- "Use strict local relaying restrictions" should also be checked.
- If you want to restrict public email to certain users, "Authenticated SMTP connections may relay mail" and "Only authenticated SMTP connections may relay mail" should be checked.
Also, enter a name for the password file and click the Edit button to create a username and password to relay with.
- Click the OK button to close this window. If you are just installing Mercury as a SMTP server, skip the next 4 steps below.
- Select Configuration-MercuryP POP3 Server.
- Click on the "Add restriction" button. Enter the private IP subnet (i.e. 192.168.1.0) and click OK.
- Click the Save button to close this window.
- Select Configuration-Manage local users to add mail users. When adding a user, don't put anything for the "APOP secret".
- Minimize Mercury Mail to the system tray.
- Set the SMTP server and POP3 server (if needed) for the mail clients to the DNS name (i.e. mail.public.com) or the IP address of this machine (i.e. 192.168.1.1).
If you are using authentication for mail relay, make sure to enable "Login with username" under Authentication in the Sending (SMTP) tab in Pegasus Mail.
Enter the username and password you set for relaying above.
- Send yourself an email message to test the mail server.
